The Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, near Cancun, is one of the world’s wonders.  You can reach this mayan site from Cancun by a rented car or tour bus in less than 2 hours.  Better yet to get a hotel (Hotel Mayan) next to the site and stay there overnight (that is what we did).

Like most historic sites, it is more enjoyable if you read and research beforehand; otherwise simply hire one of the English-speaking guides.

Carry plenty of water!  Not only to drink but to liberally spinkle it on your head!! It is hot out there.

 This is only one of the 7 wonders of the world that I have visited.  I am DREAMING of visiting Petra in Jordan.
