Is there swine flu in Cancun?

We are still not sure about this. There are NO confirmed reports of swine flu in Cancun. There are however two cases reported about young people who came back from Cancun (& Yucatan).

In case of the NYC flu outbreak, here is an excerpt:

“The outbreak apparently resulted from a spring break trip in Mexico, where a group of friends spent six days lounging around the beach and pool during the day and hanging out in Cancun at night. They got back last Sunday, and some of them started getting sick in the next couple days. One student who went to Cancun could hardly speak Sunday because her voice was so hoarse and she was wearing a mask to prevent the virus from spreading; she spent several days battling a fever of nearly 103, coughing and a sore throat.”

So did these kids get swine flu in Cancun? Did they get it while traveling maybe thru Mexico City? Did they get it on the airplane? Did they get it at home?

No telling as of yet.

  1. Me and my husband are supposed to be leaving for Cancun on May 2nd. I am so worried that a travel advisory will be put into place and we will not be able to take the trip. I have been looking forward to this for months.

  2. Hi Melissa,

The situation is indeed fluid. I hope by then (not a long time away) the situation is more clear. Nothing has been reported from Cancun, but it pays to be careful anyways. I don’t wish to advise you one way or another, but to say to read the news and be dilligent.

  3. Does anyone know the situation in Cozumel? I’m suppose to go Scuba Diving this coming weekend, but I am thinking about cancelling the trip.

  4. Jes, I don’t have an answer to that. Authorities have not reported anything out of ordinary in the State of QR.

You may want to go to http://www.google.com/alerts and set up one alert for ‘cancun flu’ and one alert for ‘cozumel flu’, to make sure you get all the related news (if any).

  5. I know is if no travel advisories get issued I will still go. There is no telling exactly where this came from.

  6. Myself and my boyfriend are travelling to Playa Del Carmen at the end of May. I know know one can say if it will have spread by then to that side. But is there a website or something we can go on to get updated. We are flying from the UK.

  7. There is still no report of flu coming out of Cancun itself. By the end of May the situation would be all settled. One would know what is going on by then. No specific websites that I know, but you can always set up google alerts like suggested previously.

  8. Here’s a useful map, that I believe will be updated regularly:

  9. I do not want to worry about this situation, but it’s hard not to… And now one kid from here, Sacramento, got the flu after a trip to CancĂșn.
I Will be traveling July 6th to Cancun and I hope that by then things will be figured out, if not it;s gonna suck to reschedule the trip.

I just read on the news that a travel advisory was release here in the US to not fly to Mexico.

  10. Lu, can you provide a link to the travel advisory please?

Yes, there was a case in Sacramento. Link on this site.

July 6th is a long time away, fortunately.

  11. The kid in Sacramento was swabbed, and results will be coming back from CDC today or tomorrow.

  12. well my husbands company has canceled our trip to cancun

  13. I have a trip to Playa del Carmen as well. Our wedding is scheduled for late November. I know that’s a way off but pretty much the entire wedding party has called me to confirm the location.

If I here anything, I’ll be sure to post the link

  14. Hi Amanda, thank you for your post. I hope that this one will blow away like SARS, soon. November is indeed a long way away.

Yes, let me know please if you have any updates. We will putblish it on the blog. Also do sign up for our alert newsletter (yellow box, scroll up).

  15. I am supposed to leave for Cancun on the 10th. Do you think the situation will be resolved by then?

  16. That is a bit away, so I do hope so. This is a VERY fast moving story.

Make sure you know the policies as far as cancelling the trip/refunds, etc., and if there are deadlines for that. If ok, then I would wait and see.

The current danger besides getting the flu is the whole country of Mexico being quarantined (Cuba just cut all flights to Mexico, Air Transat just canceled all flights to Mexico).
