Cancun and Swine Flu: Should You Be Concerned ?
As of writing of this blog post, there are no cases of Swine Flu reported in Cancun. But is Cancun Swine Flu something you should be concerned about?
The picture out of Mexico is very muddied right now. BBC is reporting 200 swine flu deaths in Mexico City a number a lot higher than what is being reported officially. Although this death toll is reported by some interviewees, there is a great cause for concern.
Here are some points about Cancun and Swine Flu:
- Cancun is not adequately stocked with swine flu medicaton. So if you are going, perhaps you can get hold of that medication before you go. Contact your doctor, and note that this medication has to be taken in the first couple of days when symptoms are observed.
- The airport in Cancun is now being quarantined Authorities have health units on alert for incoming suspected cases of flu (correction: see comments at the bottom, the point is selective checking of passengers not wholesale quarantine, apologies for confusion). That is a good thing! But if you are displaying flu-like symptoms, you will probably be quarantined and denied entry or exit. So take your chance.
- Medical facilities in Cancun are good for foreigners (e.g. American Hospital)… as long as you stick to Cancun you should be ok.
Do we have any infrmation about Cozumel swine flu, Chichen Itza swine flu,…. no we don’t yet, but we will report as soon as we hear.
Check out the swine flue map.

where did you get the info that the airport is in quarantine. i´m on the phone with the airport, it is not.
Hi, this is a case of miscommunication I think. The point about Cancun Airport was not that everyone is being quarantined (sigh!) but that they have health units on high alert to take care of passengers that show flu-like symptoms. This info is being reported from the follwoing source:

“Similarly noted that the Cancun International Airport has an international health module, which is already operating on alert, with a review of suspected cases of passengers who arrive at this tourist destination, with symptoms of the disease.
This item said that the symptoms of influenza are similar to those of common flu, with fever over 39 degrees centigrade.
On the other hand at the airport there was an atmosphere of tension among some passengers, because they commented that there is insufficient information about the disease.”

It would be crazy to travel to Cancun. Many of the infected travelers from the UK and US were in Cancun when infected. Just because Mexico is not reporting cases in one of its biggest money making destinations, does not make is safe. Use some COMMON SENSE. People visiting Cancun spread swine flu to both the US, UK, and SEVERAL other countries. And this site, promoting tourism, is overlooking the FACTS>
This site is not ignoring that. On the contrary, we have been very early to break stories of infected people coming back from Cancun. There is time for travel, and there is time for safety.
I have gone to Cancun four times in the past couple years. I love Cancun. I am however a bit concerned about this whole swine flu thing. I am returing to Cancun in late June. Do you guys think that it will be back to normal by then?
I love Cancun too (hence this blog). Fortunately for you, you have a LOT of time to figure this thing out. It either fizzles out or becomes a full-fledged pandemic (god forbid) by then.
So today is May 13-how is Swin Flu now a day in Cancun and it’s airplanes. I fly out May 25 on Mexicana Airlines and not sure whether or not to go at this point. I think I am more concern with the plane. Anyone very recently came back from Cancun? I need advice!
