Hotel zone in Cancun is the most amazing place in the world. It is a narrow strip of land on one side surrounded by Gulf of Mexico and on the other side by a lagoon. This entire strip is chock-full of hotels on both sides. The hotels on this side of the Gulf of Mexico are of higher quality, as Gulf of Mexico is much nicer than the lagoon.

My family and I have stayed in the hotel zone four times already. We generally stayed in timeshares. We have enjoyed our time there, every time. The beach is beautiful with white sand, the weather is hot which we like, the food is great, the service is great, and the pool is always nice and available and clean. The only negative today is that we have found the beaches to be more rocky, much more than before. We understand this is due to the typhoons in this area which have cut up the beaches. Hotels try very hard to repair the beaches, but you can find rocks in there from time to time. Some hotel beaches are of course better than the others. For really called and rock free watchers, you can head down to Maya Riviera.

So when you go to Cancun your basic choices are either the hotel zone or the Maya Riviera area. The hotel zone is much closer to Cancun itself, providing you great shopping, access to Wal-Mart!, and is generally more fun. But if you like very very quiet times, all inclusiveness, jungles, and quiet waters, head out to Maya Riviera. These two areas serve different characters of people.
