Cancun Travel Safety: Tips for you

What is Cancun safety like these days? I have been to Cancun many times, but not in the last 2 years. The situation there has now somewhat deteriorated, and therefore one has to maintain better safety precautions.

Here are some tips:

  • Be on the lookout for pickpockets. Like anywhere else in the world, keep your passports and other valuables in the hotel safeboxes (most provide them free), or wear a pouch. Don’t put them in your pocket.
  • Be mindful of hawkers: There are many of them in the airport and in Cancun, and on the beach. They hawk different stuff, and different tourist plans. Know what you are getting into.
  • Don’t travel outside Cancun to places you don’t know. Although roads are generally safe, it is better to be careful, and safe than sorry. Travel to well-beaten paths, and stay on tourist roads. Go to rural places only with a reputable guide, although I have found rural places to be generally safe and very charming!
  • Stay in the hotel zone as much as possible. Hotel zone is a well protected area guarded by private and government security. So you are well off staying within this zone as much as possible, unless you know what you’re doing.

Cancun is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world. If you take proper precautions and do not act too touristy, you and your family will have the most amazing experience in Cancun. Cancun safety should be your number one priority, and at the same time, something that can be managed leading to a fun trip.
