Cancun Crime: Don’t Travel to Cancun?

Is Cancun crime a real concern today? With everything that is going on in Mexico, one wonders if it is still safe to go to Cancun? Last time I was in Cancun was two years ago. At that time there was no problem at all in Cancun, but then with everything that is going on, what are the chances of having a real problem in Cancun?

Based on my conversation with a friend who recently visited the Cancun hotel strip, he said that this trip is safe, but he felt that the city of Cancun was unsafe, and he did not venture out to the outer parts off the Yucatan peninsula for fear of safety. He said he saw a great deal of police presence in hotel zone, which was kept low profile as the police were not wearing uniforms. So I think the upshot is that you will be very safe as long as you stick to the tried and true hotel zone and tourist attractions. Once you venture out off the tourist zones, then you are on your own. And so do not venture out to the great unknown and make sure that you know the area well.

I still think that Cancun crime is today manageable. You will find crime anywhere you go so it is important that you do not act like a tourist, you do not stand out in the crowd, and you go to places that are safe for tourists. It should be noted that because so much of the wealth of Cancun relies on tourism, the government there is pushed hard by the hotel owners to do everything in its power to protect tourists. That is why we have not heard anything about tourists being kidnapped or murdered or anything like that in Cancun. So from a statistical point of view you are probably much safer in Cancun that you are a Los Angeles.

When I travel to Cancun again? Of course I would. I think this is the best place in the world to vacation!
